Hamilton Square
Hamilton Square
Location:
Corner of Sterling Street and Main Street
History:
Hamilton Square is named for Perley R. Hamilton, who died in World War I. Perley was the first member of the Elks of the United States killed in the war. For his service the town of Clinton has honored his memory by naming this park after him. Many may know the park as “Depot Square” because of the park’s location and history. The park is located at the intersections of Main Street & Sterling Street, across from Water Street. The park is surrounded by many famous landmarks including the former Bigelow Carpet Mill and the Train Depot.
This park is home to a WWI Monument donated and coordinated by the James R. Kirby American Legion Post 50. Lisa A. McPhee, commander of the local American Legion branch at the time of installation said “After much thought I agree with the site, because these men stood together shoulder to shoulder and left Clinton from that location to fight for our freedom.” To view the newspaper article click here.
“This monument represents a reunion of sorts for the men who did not return to Clinton with their fellow soldiers and sailors. Now, once again, they are all standing together in that special location. This location embraces what is good about Clinton and what these heroes stood for during a time of war.”
